Cambodia
IES has recently completed least cost generation plans, dispatch simulation and power flow modelling of Cambodia’s power system in order to assess the impact of scenarios with high solar uptake in the country. This work is financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and was completed under the Scaling Up Renewable Energy in Low Income Countries Investment Plan initiative. IES continues to be active in Cambodia’s power sector with ongoing work in the country and is presently undertaking a country-wide assessment of the economic implications of solar uptake for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Greater Mekong Subregion
In early 2016, IES completed a comprehensive study into the development of power sector scenarios for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to maximally deploy renewable energy in the region. This involved modelling all national power systems within the GMS with scenarios of very high solar and wind uptake. Since mid-2016, IES in partnership with Ricardo Energy & Environment have been working on a World Bank financed study to accelerate Power Market Development in the GMS. To support this work, IES has been undertaking cost-benefit analysis of different cross-border transmission projects in the region based on power system modelling with the power development plans of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam operating as an integrated power system

Mongolia
IES has been providing World Bank funded Technical Assistance to numerous government agencies in Mongolia for several years on targeted topics of interest to Ministry of Energy (MOE), Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), National Dispatching Center (NDC), Mongolian Energy Economics Institute, and National Renewable Energy Center (NREC). The technical assistance has involved advising and training staff on Renewable Energy Integration, power system economics, least cost electricity planning and power system dispatch simulations for renewable energy and optimising the operation of dispatch of battery / energy storage systems. Other training has been concerned with use and application of the Homer Pro and PVsyst software packages. This work was targeted towards assisting in terms of medium to long term energy planning. IES is presently assisting the MOE, NDC and ERC to update Mongolia’s National Energy Sector Master plan under World Bank financed Technical Assistance.
