IES works closely with organisations and government departments in Australian energy markets on a range of assignments, primarily focusing on renewable energy, regulatory policy, technical assessments and market studies. A recent focus of IES has been on analyses into the implications of small scale distributed generation and its impact on the Australian National Electricity Market and the development of tools and models that are appropriate for the systematic analysis of power systems that have high levels of renewable energy generation. 

IES is presently undertaking a power flow and dispatch simulation modelling of Cambodia’s power system to assess the impact of scenarios with high solar uptake in the country.  This work is financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and being completed under the Scaling Up Renewable Energy in Low Income Countries Investment Plan initiative.

In early 2016, IES completed a comprehensive study into the development of power sector scenarios for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to maximally deploy renewable energy in the region.  This involved modelling all national power systems within the GMS with scenarios of very high solar and wind uptake.  Since mid-2016, IES in partnership with Ricardo Energy & Environment have been working on a World Bank financed study to accelerate Power Market Development in the GMS.  To support this work, IES has been undertaking cost-benefit analysis of different cross-border transmission projects in the region based on power system modelling with the power development plans of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam operating as an integrated power system

In 2014, IES undertook modelling of the Java-Bali interconnected system with a view to developing a number of least cost dispatch scenarios around PLN's electricity plans as part of a client's investment decision-making process.

IES in partnership with DIgSILENT Pacific are currently working with Ministry of Energy and Mines and Electricite du Laos to undertake assessments of the national transmission plan and generation adequacy of hydro resources under a World Bank financed project.

Since 2005, IES has been undertaking energy sector capacity building projects in Myanmar. From 2013-15, IES worked closely with the Ministry of Energy to complete an Asian Development Bank to prepare a 20-year energy master plan, including energy demand forecasting, supply options, investment requirements and legal and institutional arrangements.  In 2016, IES has been involved in updating the Energy Master Plan and performing training and capacity building of staff in the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. 

Our New Zealand clients use IES software products to support them in spot market operations and data analytic.

IES is proud to have also worked with clients in other ASEAN countries, including Lao PDR, Cambodia and Malaysia. Work has included econometric modelling, energy sector comparisons, government presentations and analysis of energy sector reform. 

IES has worked extensively in the Philippines with both government and private clients. Projects have included electricity market modelling, market design studies, market systems and metering audits, benchmark pricing methodologies, training on market concepts, and wholesale electricity market analysis. 

Working with energy market authorities and global corporations, IES has been active in Singapore for over 10 years. These range from market studies to stochastic modelling, energy policy advice and qualitative reviews of wholesale price drivers. The Singapore regulator also uses the IES NEO data visualisation tool for market surveillance.

IES has worked in South Korea since 2008, providing advisory services for confidential and government clients. Projects have included market summaries, market outlooks, transaction support, electricity market simulations and energy policy assessment. 

In 2016, IES completed a review of Thailand’s Demand Response market for a private client seeking to better understand issues and options in Thailand’s power sector for providing demand response.

IES recently completed a project concerned with enhancing the business processes and organisational structure of the regional power corporations in Vietnam with a key focus being to enhance the operational efficiency of their rural district branches.  IES worked closely with the project counterpart, EVN Central Power Corporation in Da Nang.

IES has been working in Vietnam for over the last 10 years with a focus on the implementation of a long-term roadmap for the reform of the electricity sector, working closely with government authorities, power corporations and financial institutions to deliver energy market design, policy reviews and economic modelling. IES in partnership with SW Advisory has recently completed a the Vietnam Wholesale Electricity Market (VWEM) detailed design and the development of the VWEM Rules for the market.  Other assignments in Vietnam that IES has recently completed include a detailed review of the Revised Power Development Plan 7 for the General Directorate on Energy and work with the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) and National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC) on VWEM implementation issues. 

IES recently completed a Distribution Efficiency Project for the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) and EVN Ho Chi Minh City, which is concerned with the implementation of the country's first Demand Response Pilot program

IES maintains and updates electricity market models and all the data for the Western Australia's electricity market (WEM).  We periodically undertake market studies on the WEM for our clients.
